Shenandoah Valley School-Based Preschool

Funding provided by Head Start, Virginia Preschool Initiative, Special Education Preschool, Title 1, and the locally served public schools.

The goal of the school-based preschool network is to utilize various local, state, and federal funding sources that prepare children an their families for successful transition into the kindergarten education process offered by the public schools.

During the school year, the school-based preschool network operates a full-day program based in the public schools of Staunton, Waynesboro, Harrisonburg, Augusta County, Rockingham County, Bath County, and Highland County. The network serves about 600 children all funded by Head Start, the Virginia Preschool Initiative, Special Education preschool, and local school divisions.

Three and 4-year olds may be served by one of the school-based network partners. Participating children must be 3 or 4 years old by September 30 of the enrollment year. Priority is given to 4-year olds who meet identified needs related to preparing kindergarten in local public schools.

There are no fees to participate, but parents are asked to volunteer in their child’s classroom. Children learn the prerequisites for successful entry into kindergarten, pre-literacy skills, social competency and other developmentally appropriate educational skills. School-based preschool applications are taken year round. The network also maintains a waiting list once all classroom slots are filled.
