The school opened in 1993 as a math, science, and high-tech program. In 2002, a second program was added for visual and theater arts. High school juniors and seniors earn up to four credits during the half-day program. Course material is college-level, supported by texts, multimedia, the Web and readings from professional literature. The mission of Genesis is to provide a setting with small classes, trained staff, and an intervention program designed to help students learn positive social interaction skills, appropriate school behaviors, and responsible decision making. Students work to earn regular middle and high school credits. Curriculum is based on the state Standards of Learning. SOL tests are administered in cooperation with the students’ home school divisions. Students who are 16 or older also can enter the ISAEP/GED program with parental permission. The program involves both a vocational component and a requirement to pass the GED exam to satisfy the student’s compulsory attendance requirements. The center offers 18 programs in four areas: Trade and industrial, agriculture, business and information technology, and health and medical science. The Employment Training Program offers career exploration to pre-vocational students to prepare them for transition to the regular career and technical education programs. The Adult Education Program offers evening continuing education classes for area residents. The school partners with local businesses and industries to provide apprenticeship programs. The Adult Learning Center provides remediation opportunities and GED study for adults in the area. It also serves as a GED testing site.
